Every couple of months a revolutionary new diet, fat loss drug or exercise machine promises instant results. While most result in rapid weight loss initially this is mainly due to lean tissue (muscle) and water loss which actually reduces your body's ability to burn fat in the longterm. These diets are not sustainable and on returning to your usual eating habits the weight returns quickly.

As humans we like the 'quick fix' idea, however, the secret to good health is to dedicate yourself to eating a healthy/balanced diet, exercising and resting your body. We all know this deep down and if you are willing and able to apply this you can have a healthy and fit body and you can feel good about yourself.

Being healthy does not mean that you have to be a size 6 and it does not mean only eating only cabbage soup or grapefruit! Being healthy means being physically and emotionally happy and eating a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet which makes you feel good, energises you and allows you to enjoy occasional treats. The buzz word should be nutrition not diet and it should become a way of life not a temporary weight loss measure

Eating foods close to their natural state is best and eating wholegrain products ie wholemeal pasta and bread, means that your blood sugar levels won't dip and spike causing you to feel hungry and snack on inappropriate foods. Fresh fruit and vegetables can help you resist cravings for sweets and they also contain lots of vitamins. Try to include new and varied foods so you don't become bored.

Processed meat is high in fat, with added preservatives and other hidden extras but healthier alternatives are available. Lean meat and fish are ideal and when baked or steamed are much healthier than when fried.

Avoiding excess caffeine and alcohol is ideal as these are diuretics. Water is needed for all processes in your body and being dehydrated can mean that fat loss is hampered. Try and avoid sugary and diet sodas for the same reason.

Try and assess your lifestyle and eating habits. Learn to know your specific danger times and formulate strategies to overcome them. How often do you eat fast food? How big are your portions? Do you eat because you are bored or sad? Do you snack while watching TV? With some careful consideration, changing these habits can produce amazing results.
